Veterans of the Vietnam War faced a divided American public when they returned from service five decades ago.

“I remember there was a sign on this guy’s lawn when we got back,” said Charles W. Palm Jr., who served from 1966 to 1969. “It said ‘Sailors and dogs, keep off my grass.’”
