CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield recently announced that hackers had gained access to limited personal information of about 1.1 million current and former customers.

I am deeply concerned about this security breach and support a full investigation.

Subscribers who registered to use CareFirst’s website prior to June 20, 2014 are potentially affected by the breach. CareFirst BCBS serves customers in Maryland and throughout the D.C. region.

Hackers may have accessed the names, dates of birth, email addresses, CareFirst website usernames, and subscriber identification numbers of these customers, but they did not obtain medical information, Social Security or credit card numbers, or account passwords.

CareFirst will notify current or former members who may be affected by the data breach by mail in the next 1 to 3 weeks.
