The great recession left millions of Americans unemployed and millions more struggling to support their families. Although we’ve made progress, it is clear that we still have work to do. Moreover longer-term changes, brought by globalization and technology, have drastically changed our economy in the last three decades. With that in mind, competitiveness – how we can position our businesses and workers to compete on a global market – is the lens through which I analyze economic policy.
As the only former CEO of a publicly traded company currently serving in Congress, I understand that we need a vibrant private sector to create long-term job growth and a strong middle class. I support policies that encourage entrepreneurship, innovation, and a better climate for business.
There is also a role for government in making our country more competitive. Around the globe the healthiest economies are those where the public and private sector work together. My competitiveness agenda has five key components: 1) investing in a world-class education and research system for our workers, 2) developing a national energy policy that encourages domestic energy production with a goal towards becoming an alternative energy leader, 3) immigration reform so that the best and brightest can work for our companies, 4) infrastructure investment to rebuild our roads and bridges, and 5) a grand bargain budget deal to get our fiscal house in order.
In May I introduced the first major component of my competitiveness agenda, the Partnership to Build America Act (H.R. 2084). My legislation would finance up to $750 billion in infrastructure investment at no cost to the taxpayer, instead bonds would be sold to the private sector. With strong support from Republicans and Democrats, it represents the bipartisan approach to job creation that I believe is essential. WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Barbara A. Mikulski and Ben Cardin, together with U.S. Representative John Delaney (all D-Md.), today announced that the Town of Westernport has been awarded $2.2 million in federal grants and $600,000 in federal loans to install a new water system and water tank. The new tank will improve service for more than 1,144 households and 45 businesses in Allegany County.
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Congressman John K. Delaney (Md.-6) and Congressman Ben Luján (N.M.-3) have filed resolutions in the House and Senate affirming the establishment of a national goal of more than 50 percent of America’s electricity production coming from clean and carbon-free electricity sources by 2030 and calling for the enactment of new legislation to achieve this goal. In a show of significant support for this initiative, the “50x30 Resolutions” are cosponsored by 30 Senators and 103 House Members.
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Barbara A. Mikulski and Ben Cardin together with U.S. Representative John Delaney (all D-Md.) today announced that the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded a $87,000 federal grant to Allegany College to purchase 15 new dental hygiene units which will improve efficiency for students, reduce expensive repair costs, and help maintain hygiene services offered to the public. The new equipment for Allegany College’s dental hygiene program will improve training for approximately 100 students with 4,000 dental hygiene patients within two years.
WASHINGTON – According to a report released today by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) 58,495 of the nation’s bridges are structurally deficient, including 5,313 in Maryland. Nationwide, nearly 10% of the nation’s bridges are in need of repair. One of the busiest structurally deficient bridges in the country is the I-695/U.S. 1 bridge in Baltimore, which handles 193,000 crossings a day. Congressman John K.

CUMBERLAND — U.S. Rep. John Delaney was treated to a tour of the Footer Dye Works building on Wednesday during a visit to Western Maryland.
"It's exciting to see a redevelopment project here in Cumberland," said Delaney while meeting members of the press prior to the tour.
ROCKVILLE – Congressman John K. Delaney (MD-6) joined federal, state and local officials Monday at the dedication of the new National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) facility in Rockville. The dedication ceremony marked the opening of expanded new facilities for NCCoE. The new facility includes 22 labs dedicated to issues such as access control, mobile device security, online identity authentication, data integrity, situational awareness and IT asset management.
HAGERSTOWN – Congressman John K. Delaney (MD-6) hosted a Western Maryland Job Fair Tuesday afternoon in Hagerstown attended by over 500 people. Over 60 local employers participated in the event, which took place at Kaplan University in Hagerstown.
On Monday December 14 Congressman John K. Delaney will host an Entrepreneurship Workshop with local entrepreneurs and national, state and local business advocates. The workshop will take place at The Universities at Shady Grove at 4:30-7:00 PM. The event is free to attend and open to the public.
WASHINGTON – The House considered today a new conference Highway Bill, the FAST Act, legislation that broadly maintains current federal investment in infrastructure for the next five years. The legislation, which passed the House, patches the funding gap in the Highway Trust Fund with a variety of one-time offsets, including contracting out IRS services, selling off a portion of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, using revenues from the Federal Reserve and increasing customs fees.
WASHINGTON – Congressman John K. Delaney (MD-6) wrote to House Transportation & Infrastructure Chairman Bill Shuster Thursday, urging him to increase baseline funding levels in the next highway bill. The Transportation & Infrastructure Committee is expected to markup a new highway bill next week. In his letter, Delaney wrote, “Instead of continuing our glide path to a third-world infrastructure, our next highway bill should reverse course and start our infrastructure comeback.
